We all love to pamper ourselves at some point or the other. Don’t we? DIY recipes are a sure shot way to indulge and do interesting stuff. Don’t worry, we are using tried and tested natural ingredients that won’t affect your skin, much like our all-natural Revitol series.
Recipe: DIY Easy Moisturizer
Hemp Seed Oil / Argan Oil / Apricot Kernel Oil / Jojoba Oil – 2 Tbsp.
Rosehip Oil / Tamanu Oil / Carrot Seed Oil / Evening Primrose Oil / Neem Oil – 2 – 4 Tbsps.*
Essential Oil – a few drops
Add the carrier oil (argan / apricot / hemp / jojoba) to a mixing bottle, or dark bottle with dropper.
Add Rosehip / Tamanu / Evening Primrose/ Neem Oil to the same bottle. Only if you use carrot seed oil, use a few drops only.
Add an essential oil that’s good for skin and also smells great and mix well.
That’s it – apply at night or in the morning for gently nourishing and moisturizing your skin.
Tweaking the Recipe
Hemp Seed Oil, Argan Oil, Apricot oil and Jojoba Oil suit all skin types. So you can choose whatever you have available or like. You can also add Sweet Almond Oil instead, but it is not readily absorbed into the skin.
You can use Avocado if you have mature or dry skin or Grapeseed oil if you have oily, acne-prone or normal skin. You add as many oils as you like, or even combine multiple oils. For example, Argan oil can be quite pricey, so you can combine Jojoba Oil, or Apricot Oil.
Based on what you prefer or need, choose between Rosehip Oil, Tamanu Oil, Carrot Seed Oil, Evening Primrose Oil or even Neem Oil. You can also use Emu oil, though I consider it is still new (outside Australia) to experiment with.
You can add one or more oils, for better results! All these oils are nourishing, though with Carrot Seed Oil, a few drops should do. It is highly nutritious and costly, so little is more! Neem Oil can have an off-putting smell, so if you are planning to use it during the day, check how it smells like!
There are many essential oils to choose from that are good for your skin – Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Peppermint, Rose, Rose Geranium, Neroli, Lemongrass, etc. Here’s a list of essential oils that are good for skin.
Why DIY Recipes are Great?
The key is identify what suits your skin best and use that. Besides, the idea is to gently nourish and moisturize your skin. When you make your own recipes, it is also affordable and you can always tweak it to your choice.
It is easy to prepare this recipe, though you can make it as exhaustive as you want! You can add as many essential oils, or other oils, or even all of them! Or you can even different versions for different seasons and try out what works for you best.
Or, you can tweak it for your mood. For example, adding Lavender Essential Oil or Roman Chamomile when you are upset, depressed, stressed, or feel worked out can give you an instant mood lift and leave you refreshing.
You can use Peppermint Essential Oil blend after a tired day and Rose Essential Oil blend or Rose Geranium blend, or Neroli blend when you need to give your face a lift! Not to mention, Rose smells great!
On the other hand, you can consider Sweet Almond oil blend during winters.
If you have scars or pigmentation, Lemon Grass should do wonders for your skin. On the other hand, Neroli and Rose Geranium can work wonders for aging skin and those, when combined with Rosehip, Carrotseed, Avocado and Argan can reverse aging signs like fine lines and wrinkles!
Why Use Oils?
Unlike body butters (we’ll learn about them in our future posts), oils are light, non-greasy and a few drops are all what you need. They don’t clog your pores, don’t feel greasy and don’t leave a layer on application. These oils are absorbed quickly and leave your skin radiant and fresh. Body butters are good too, as long as you know how to use them. Oils are quite easy and less messy! They can be used during the day, or night. That’s what I really love about them.
